Dolomite is a mineral that most often forms as an alteration of calcite, as magnesium replaces much of the calcium in the crystal structure. Consequently, it is not unusual for the two minerals to occur together. Both minerals exhibit the same well-developed rhombohedral cleavage and have roughly the same hardness.
